Cancel a captured pointer drag cleanly

Keep a drag’s accepted result separate from its temporary preview and interruption cleanup.

Your build starts here

Replace bracketed details with your own goal, context, and checks. Keep the first build small enough to inspect.

THE COMPLETE TEMPLATE
Repair [drag, resize, scrub, or draw interaction] using the existing pointer-event architecture. Identify the active pointer, starting snapshot, temporary preview, and commit rule. Use pointer capture where appropriate for the supported interaction, without assuming that every sequence ends in a normal release.

Define behavior for pointer cancellation, lost capture, focus change, removal of the dragged item, and a second contact. Clean up temporary listeners and state exactly as needed. Keep browser scrolling and zoom behavior intentional in the affected region. Decide whether cancellation restores the starting value or preserves a documented partial result; do not silently commit a preview.

Verify dragging outside the original hit area, normal release, cancellation, item removal during drag, repeated attempts, and an alternative keyboard action. Check the accepted value after each case and report device/browser coverage separately.

Make this prompt yours

A drag preview and a committed edit need distinct ownership. Keep any browser gesture restriction limited to the region that needs it.

Supported: Original drag recovery template. Pointer cancellation, implicit capture release, and lostpointercapture are documented. Preview/commit and keyboard recovery rules are explicit product policy, not browser defaults.
